It was not too many years ago when getting a "real" sports bike meant buying a 10-speed with ultra-thin wheels and tires, and those attractively curled handlebars framed by brake cables. While many still ride similar bicycles today, those excellent machines are limited by uneven or rocky terrain. Riding a bike made for the trails solves that problem, but today there are quite a few manufacturers to choose from. Why buy Giant mountain bikes?

The corporation began in 1972, in part to buttress the manufacturing capabilities of other companies such as Schwinn and Nishiki. The latter half of the 1980s saw the company take off as a recognized bicycle builder on its own merits. It is now recognized in the global market as a major force, and is known as a builder of high-quality bicycles for all uses.

These all-terrain bikes differ from previous designs in several important ways. As their name implies, they were created for the off-road riding aficionado, and they must be capable of withstanding a great deal more punishment and stress than those limited to riding on pavement. They need to be able to hit rocks, bounce along unpaved washboard surfaces, or jump over logs, and most are equipped with wide, knobby tires for better traction.

Today, front and back wheel suspension systems are common on these models. The handlebars have also evolved, becoming heavier and straighter, and wheels have become wider with new calibrations and standards. These changes have all led to an entirely different style of riding for the outdoor enthusiast, and enables many bikers to go where no bicycle rider has gone before.

Off-road biking become a widespread activity, and today there are several different styles of this sport to choose from. Cross-country inspired models are now also built for racing, and share much of their mechanical DNA with off-road designs. The company helped pioneer lightweight and efficient aluminum frame construction, and later graduated to advanced carbon fiber composites.

The trail bike is a multipurpose machine that is fun both on a track or in the woods, and withstands either environment well. Sturdy and stable, they are cousin to the enduro or all-mountain bike, which are designed to be ridden in rough terrain for long periods. Downhill racers, on the other hand, need to be light and strong, and are used primarily for speed, and have set many timed records.

The urban or street hybrids so common today in the city are also part of this mechanical family. They have simply taken the durability and stability of an off-road frame and made it into a bike fit for heavy traffic as well as any other use. Popular with people who do a lot of urban biking, they carry with them the safety advantages of wider wheels and fatter tires that grip well in wet weather on slippery streets.

The company also makes models for other sports riding such as 4X challenges or single-speed racing. Why buy Giant mountain bikes? Few other companies today have the design capabilities, experience and reputation of this company, which is known for an excellent, reliable product. Their products are used by professional racers, and have won several awards. Even those who plan to do no racing will find that this brand of bicycle will provide a good, safe and exhilarating riding experience.
